The ParishThe parish of Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll lies in the east of Anglesey, indeed it forms part of Anglesey's eastern coastline with the Menai Straits. Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll sits at the western end of the Britannia Bridge and is 4 miles west of the Caernarvonshire town of Bangor. Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll sits on the old line of the busy A55 road which connects Anglesey & Holyhead to Chester, this road fortunately bypasses Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll to its north. Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll is a substantial village which with a small wharf would have largely earned its living from agriculture and the locally quarried stone, a small port would have been devoted to that commodity. Today Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll attracts fame & notoriety as the place with the longest station name in Britain "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" graces its station and has become a tourist attraction in itself. A number of small streams drain the parish to the Menai Straits emerging by the wharf. Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll is sited on a low hill at around 50 metres above the sea, the church is somewhat lower (20 metres). By the standards of the island of Anglesey Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll was a relatively small parish, it covered almost 750 acres and would have supported a population of around 600 parishioners. Like most of Wales Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll is not mentioned in Domesday Book which did not cover the area. |
