The ParishThe parish of Llanwenllwyfo lies in the extreme northeast of Anglesey forming quite a stretch of the islands Irish Sea coastline. Llanwenllwyfo is located roughly 4 miles southeast of the small town of Amlwch. There is no village of Llanwenllwyfo as such, its main centre of population is the hamlet of Dulas, wherein sits today's church, and which sits just under 2 miles east of the A5025 road which forms the island's eastern coast-road. The parish is dominated by the estate of Llys Dulas, home of Baron Dinorben, who's mines on nearby Parys Mountain employed many of the men of Llanwenllwyfo parish in mining for copper. Being a coastal community the parish would undoubtedly have exploited the sea for its fish and shell-fish as well as a normal farming regime of mixed pastoral & arable. Today the parish is renowned for its coastal scenery, recently made more accessible by the Anglesey Coastal Trail, and the superb beach of Traeth Dulas which forms the southern edge of the parish. The Afon Goch is the main river draining into the bay but numerous small streams reach the coast more widely. Dulas is sited at around 50 metres above the sea whilst the wider parish is gently undulating to local heights of 161 metres just east of Penysarn. Llanwenllwyfo parish is fairly typically sized for its area, covering just under 1,800 acres it would have supported a population of close to 500 parishioners. Like most of Wales Llanwenllwyfo is not mentioned in Domesday Book which did not cover this area. |
