The ParishThe parish of Pulloxhill lies in south central Bedfordshire about 3 miles southeast of the market town of Ampthill. Pulloxhill is a middling sized and rather linear village which sits about 2 miles west of the A6 road which connects Bedford with Luton. Most properties along a lane which runs along the crest of a low ironstone ridge and which terminated as a dead-end a little beyond the village. To the southeast of the village lies the brick-making area of clays whilst Pulloxhill sits, contrastingly, on iron rich sandstone. The principal economy of the village would have been the grazing and pasturing of cattle but today the farming has become much more arable in nature. Pulloxhill is drained by small streams, feeders heading northeast to join the River Flit at Shefford the latter joins the Ivel and then the Great Ouse to reach the North Sea through The Wash. Pulloxhill is sited at around 100 metres above the sea and stands upon the local high point with land falling away until the distant ridge of the Sundon Hills a few miles south. A fairly typically sized parish for its area, Pulloxhill covered just under 1,600 acres and would have supported a population of close to 600 parishioners. In Domesday times Pulloxhill was held by one Nigel d'Aubigny and was also a middling sort of place with assets of 13 ploughs and the usual meadows & woodland. |
