The Parish

The parish of Souldrop lies in the extreme northwest of Bedfordshire and, indeed, forms a short stretch of the border with neighbouring Northamptonshire. Souldrop is located roughly 4 miles southeast of the Northamptonshire town of Rushden and sits a half mile west of the A6 road which connects Rushden with Bedford. Souldrop is a small and compact village mostly formed around a "Y" shaped fork of lanes. Like many villages in this area the local economy would have been underpinned by arable farming. Modern developments have come to the area, however, the railway line between Bedford & Wellingborough passes through the parish whilst nearby are Santa Pod drag-racing track and the Sharnbrook research centre. Souldrop is drained southwards by a small tributary of the Great Ouse which is soon reached and so begins a long journey to reach the North Sea through The Wash. Souldrop is sited at around 90 metres above the sea and sits on something of a ridge where height rises to just over 100 metres at Santa Pod. Bedfordshire parishes are often fairly small but even so Souldrop was one of the smaller, covering just under 1,100 acres it would have supported a population of a little over 300 parishioners. Souldrop is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book.

The Church

All Saints' church sits within the fork of the above mentioned "Y" shape of lanes accessed by a long driveway from the Sharnbrook Road. The church is a mixture of both the old and the relatively new. The western tower is in the Early English Gothic style and dated to c1275 by Pevsner whilst the remainder of the building is Victorian rebuild. Indeed that rebuild of 1860 succeeded an earlier Georgian effort of 1800. The tower's date makes it the earliest spire in its county. Whilst the remainder of the building is an adequately picturesque accompaniment it is that tower topped by its spire that is the highlight of the church. Pevsner's description of the nave and chancel is unemotional except to describe the carving as having "weird detailing". Parking may be found, with care, in the Sharnbrook Road where metal gates lead to the long driveway to the churchyard; whilst the churchyard is compact and has some trees these do not totally dominate the favourable aspects.
