The ParishThe parish of Hampstead Norreys, also rendered as Hampstead Norris in some sources, lies in central western Berkshire. Hampstead Norreys is a large and compact village lying about 7 miles northeast of the town of Newbury in the Berkshire Downs. Hampstead Norreys sits astride the B4009 road which connects Newbury with Goring and is about 2 miles north of the modern M4 (London to Bristol & South Wales Motorway). Hampstead Norreys sits on the lower slopes of the Berkshire Downs, the area being a mixture of loams & clays as well as chalky areas on higher ground. Today arable farming predominates but at the time of this transcript a more mixed farming regime would have been evident. Hampstead Norreys sits on the western banks of the infant River Pang, this river drains the parish south and then east to join the Thames at Pangbourne thence to the North Sea. Hampstead Norreys is sited at around 100 metres above sea level, higher ground (to 150 metres) lies to the north whilst the land slopes gently away to the south. Hampstead Norreys parish was quite large by southern standards, it covered almost 5,600 acres and would have supported a population of almost 1,300 parishioners. In Domesday times Hampstead Norreys was held by one Theodoric the goldsmith and could offer 8 ploughs, small meadows and woodland. |
