The ParishThe parish of Llanfihangel Bachellaeth lies in southwestern Caernarvonshire, in the heart of the Lleyn Penunsula, roughly 4 miles west of the coastal resort of Pwllheli. Llanfihangel Bachellaeth sits a quarter mile south of the B4415 road which links Pwllheli with Bottwnog. Llanfihangel Bachellaeth is a tiny place with only the church and a farmstead, the only significant settlement Rhyd-y_clafdy lies on the B4415 about 1 1/2 miles to the east and consists of a short run of properties including a roadside inn. The parish is highly undulating and culminates in Carn Fadryn standing at 371 metres and topped by the hill-fort of the Princes of Gwynedd. Much of the land is set to pasture with cattle on the sweeter lowland pastures whilst sheep populate the coarser, higher levels.Llanfihangel Bachellaeth is drained southwestwards by the Afon Horon which soon meets the Afon Soch and turns eastwards to meet the Irish Sea at Abersoch. Llanfihangel Bachellaeth is sited at just 10 metres above the sea at Rhyd-y-Clafdy, its church stands at 100 metres and, as already mentioned, the local high point of Carn Fadryn reaches 371 metres illustrating the strongly undulating nature of the terrain. Many Caernarvonshire parishes are extensive and Llanfihangel Bachellaeth is one such, covering a little over 2,900 acres it would have supported a population, highly scattered, of around 350 parishioners. Like most of Wales Llanfihangel Bachellaeth is not mentioned in Domesday Book which did not cover this area. |
