The ParishThe parish of Llanfihangel y Pennant lies in the extreme south of Caernarvonshire, indeed it forms part of the border with neighbouring Merioneth. Llanfihangel y Pennant is a tiny spot lying roughly 5 miles northwest of the market town of Porthmadog. Llanfihangel y Pennant sits on a narrow mountain road which climbs steeply along the valley of the Afon Dwyfor into the heart of the Snowdonia National Park. This is mountain country of extremes, to the northeast of the hamlet which marks the site of the church Moel Hebog rises to a grand height of 782 metres whilst other summits regularly top 600 metres to the north of the church. To the south the land falls more gently down to the Irish Sea. Two principal occupations would have dominated the local employment, sheep rearing on the uplands and cattle on the lowlands would have been supplemented by mining, the Welsh slate industry being a big local employer. The Afon Dwyfor is headed southwestward to reach the Irish Sea to the west of Criccieth. The area around Llanfihangel y Pennant church is sited at around 100 metres above the sea but surrounded by high mountains to all directions except the south. Llanfihangel y Pennant, by the standards of Caernarvonshire, was a relatively small parish, it covered almost 9,000 acres and supported just under 700 parishioners. In common with most of Wales there is no mention of Llanfihangel y Pennant in Domesday Book which did not cover this area. |
