The ParishThe parish of Llanllyfni lies in central Caernarvonshire about 7 miles south of the county town of Caernarvon. Llanllyfni is a small village sitting adjacent to the A487 road which connects Caernarvon with Porthmadog, the parish also has an extensive hinterland of upland to the east of the village. The A487 formally ran through Llanllyfni but now thankfully bypasses to the west. Llanllyfni would have had a mixed economy at the time of this transcript. Sitting at the break of slope between the coastal plains, full of arable land of good quality, and rising uplands to the east with extensive sheep pastures and rough moorland it was a farming community. The parish also was a notable centre for the slate industry and mining for manganese. Llanllyfni is drained by the Afon Llyfni which drains westwards the short distance to the Irish Sea. Llanllyfni village is sited at around 100 metres above the sea but land rises steeply to the east to reach local heights of 734 metres on Craig Cwm Silyn. With its extensive upland area Llanllyfni parish was extensive, it covered just over 7,500 acres and scattered across that area were over 2,000 parishioners. In common with most of Wales there is no mention of Llanllyfni in Domesday Book which does not cover this area. |
