The ParishThe parish of Mepal lies in Cambridgeshire's Fen country close to the border with neighbouring Huntingdonshire. Mepal lies about 4 miles southeast of the small town of Chatteris. Mepal sits astride the A142 road which connects Chatteris to the cathedral city of Ely. Mepal is a compact settlement built alongside the mighty Old & New Bedford Rivers which were one of the major Fenland drainage schemes of Vermuiden. The land hereabouts is almost totally reclaimed by drainage and whilst one dominated by pastures now carries a rich mix of intensive agriculture (including market gardening). Mepal, as a consequence of the drainage, sits between 1 and 4 metres above sea level, preserved by the pumps from inundation. The vast drainage rivers are heading northeastwards towards the mighty Denver sluices in Norfolk and thence via the River Great Ouse to the Wash at King's Lynn. Mepal parish is small for a Fenland parish, normally they contain extensive areas of reclaimed land, it covered just over 1,500 acres and supported almost 550 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Mepal in Domesday Book, it is assumed that its entry is subsumed in that of nearby Sutton. |

1 | 3rd June 1754 - 21st December 1812 | Registers retained by the parish - filmed copies available at Cambridgeshire Archives | Standard preprinted and self-numbered Marriage register with 4 entries per page | Grade 2 Register - not a perfect read but with a low likelihood of misreads | None |
2 | 11th May 1813 - 13th November 1836 | Registers retained by the parish - filmed copies available at Cambridgeshire Archives | Standard Rose style preprinted and prenumbered Marriage register | Grade 3 Register - there are sufficient quality issues with this register to indicate that some misreads will occur albeit few in number | The register is written in a curious and rather eccentric hand making for rather tricky reading - it is possible that a few misreads may well have occurred as a consequence |
