Newton in the Isle St James

 

The Parish

There are two parishes called Newton within Cambridgeshire, this Newton, given the suffix "in the Isle", refers to that Newton located in the extreme north of the county. Newton in the Isle forms not only part of the border with neighbouring Norfolk, albeit separated by the River Nene, but also part of the border with Lincolnshire. Newton in the Isle is located around 3 miles north of the market town of Wisbech, it is a small and compact village built around a square of roads in Cambridgeshire's Fenland. Newton in the isle sits on the B1165 road about a mile west of the A1101 which connects Wisbech with the Lincolnshire village of Long Sutton. The area is largely reclaimed land and is intensively farmed both at the time of this transcript and today. The landscape is almost flat and close to sea level. Almost all surface drainage is modified by the hand of man with most water heading into the Nene which reaches the North Sea through the Wash and the Norfolk port of King's Lynn. Newton in the Isle is sited at just 3 metres above sea level and it is many miles before significantly higher ground is reached. Fenland parishes are rather large and Newton in the Isle was no exception, it covered almost 3,100 acres and would have supported a population of around 400 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Newton in the Isles in Domesday Book.


The Church

St James' church sits appropriately enough on Church Lane, which forms the northern edge of Newton in the Isles' "square of roads, the church being on the southern side of the road. The church appears to cover the period from 14th into 15th centuries with Decorated styles predominant in the tower base, the aisle windows and the southern porch and Perpendicular styles for the remainder. However Pevsner roots out piers in the arcade which show a style characteristic of the Norman period of 11th or 12th century indicative of an earlier version of the building. The church has no boundary wall, or indeed memorials, with Church Lane being open to the road. The open site presents few restrictions to photography.
