The ParishThe parish of Llanddewi Aberarth lies on the western coast of Cardiganshire slightly south of the county's centre. The principal settlement is the the small fishing port of Aberarth but the parish also included the northern portion of nearby Aberaeron as well an extensive rural hinterland. Aberarth is located about 13 miles northwest of the market town of Lampeter and sits on the A487 road which forms the coastal road connecting Aberystwyth and Cardigan. Despite the coastal location of the main village the parish was intensively cultivated too, the soil fertile and much given to cereal production. The coastal location enabled diversity as fishing was also a notable feature of the economy. Aberarth sits in the deep valley of the Afon Arth which rushes down from higher ground, incised into a steep-sided, wooded vale, a delight for wildlife and hikers alike. Today both Aberaeron & Aberarth are featured on the Welsh Coastal Trail which closely follows this stretch of coastline. The Afon Arth, together with its southern neighbour the Afon Aeron, drain the parish the short distance to the Irish Sea. Aberarth, sitting at the river's mouth, is sited between 6 and 40 metres above the sea, land rising in rolling countryside to local heights of around 170 metres within a few miles in pleasing but not mountainous countryside. Llanddewi Aberarth parish, like many in Wales, was extensive, covering close to 3,000 acres it would have supported a population of just over 1,000 parishioners. Like most of Wales Llanddewi Aberarth is not mentioned in Domesday Book which did not cover this area. |
