The ParishThe parish of Trefilan lies in southern central Cardiganshire about 7 miles north of the market town of Lampeter. Trefilan sits on the B4337 road which connects the Carmarthenshire village of Llanybyther with Llanrhystud on the Cardiganshire coast. There is not much of a village at Trefilan, a congregation of farms and cottages marking the point where the B4337 leaves the valley of the Afon Aeron and begins its climb on to higher ground and a smaller cluster by the Aeron bridge at Tal Sarn. The area is a farming area dominated by pastoral farming, lush pastures on the valley floor of the Aeron are complemented by less rich hillsides. Two small watercourses, Nany y Fergi & Nant Rhiw Afallen, drain the short distance south to the Aeron which heads westwards to reach the Irish Sea through the port of Aberaeron. Trefilan is sited at around 90 metres above the sea, this is, however, hill country and land rises steadily to the north to reach a local height of 343 metres at the tumuli on Trichrug. Upland Cardiganshire is characterised by large parishes, Trefilan was midway between one of those and the smaller coastal examples, it covered around 2,200 acres and would have supported a population of just over 300 parishioners. Like most of Wales Trefilan was not recorded in Domesday Book which did not cover this area. |
