The ParishThe parish of Yspytty Ystwyth (modern spelling is Ysbyty) is the most easterly in Cardiganshire forming stretches of the border with both Montgomeryshire and also with Radnorshire. Yspytty Ystwyth is located about 13 miles southeast of the coastal town of Aberystwyth and sits on the B4343 road which links Devil's bridge through to Tregaron & Lampeter. Whilst Yspytty Ystwyth is the name of the parish it is but a small village lining the B4343 with the larger settlement of Pont Rhyd y Groes sitting at the crossing of the Afon Ystwyth being the larger place. Yspytty Ystwyth is an upland parish containing some of the highest land in its county, farming here is poor and largely consists of hill-farming of hardy sheep scattered across moor & mountain. The main employer of, largely men, was the lead mining industry which early gazetteers describe as "employing several hundred men". Nowadays much income is derived from tourism, the scenic beauty of the area a draw for hikers and fisherman, a special local attraction is the now booming population of Red Kite which attracts tours and provides themes for many local businesses. The Afon Ystwyth drains the parish westwards to reach the Irish Sea through Aberystwyth. Yspytty Ystwyth is sited at around 220 metres above the sea, some 60 metres above river height, land rises, however, eastwards to almost 600 metres at the Radnorshire border. Upland parishes are often extensive in their acreage and Yspytty Ystwyth was no exception, covering almost 6,000 acres it would have supported a population of around 600 parishioners. Like most of Wales Yspytty Ystwyth is not mentioned in Domesday Book which did not cover this area. |
