Llanfihangel Cilfargen St Michael

The Parish

The parish of Llanfihangel Cilfargen, the smallest in the county by some distance, lies in central Carmarthenshire. Llanfihangel Cilfargen is located about 3 miles northwest of the small market town of Llandeilo. Llanfihangel Cilfargen is little more than a hamlet with scattered farms and cottages sitting in lanes about a mile north of the A40 which connects Llandeilo with Carmarthen. There is no village as such, indeed Llanfihangel Cilfargen is not even named on modern maps. The principal activity in the parish would have been pastoral farming. Llanfihangel Cilfargen is drained southwards by the Afon Dulas which quickly reaches the Tywi and the Irish Sea through Carmarthen Bay. Llanfihangel Cilfargen is sited at about 120 metres above the sea on a ridge of land above the valley of the Afon Dulas and local heights rise to around 180 metres with a mile or so. Llanfihangel Cilfargen parish was very small by Welsh standards, smaller than most lowland English parishes, it covered just over 500 acres and supported a population of barely 50 parishioners. Like most of Wales Llanfihangel Cilfargen is not mentioned in Domesday Book which did not cover this area.

The Church

St Michael's church is now deconsecrated and is a private house with no access to the public. The church was a modern replacement built in the 1820 and consisted of nave, chancel & bellcote. St Michael was small as befitted the tiny congregation. The building sits on the southern side of a narrow lane which runs from west to east paralleling the A40. A public footpath crosses by the building. Visitors are, however, requested to respect the owner's privacy.
