The ParishThe parish of Shotwick lies in western Cheshire, indeed it forms part of the border with Wales and neighbouring Flintshire. Shotwick lies about 6 miles northwest of the city of Chester and was formerly a port on the banks of the (now silted up) River Dee. Today Shotwick village is a small cluster of cottages grouped around the Hall, the parish always held more parishioners in its wider area than in Shotwick itself. Shotwick lies just west of the A550 road (which links Chester with Birkenhead) down a narrow dead-end lane. The are would largely have been dominated by pastoral farmland on the floodplain of the Dee, most would have been employed in the port of on the surrounding farmland. Shotwick is sited at just 15 metres above the sea on the edge of the ridge of land that forms the central spine of The Wirral. Of course all drainage in the parish heads for the nearby Dee and thence into the Irish Sea. Cheshire parishes are large and Shotwick parish no exception, it covered over 4,200 acres and supported around 820 parishioners, although barely 100 were resident in Shotwick itself. In Domesday times Shotwick was a tiny place held by the Canons of Chester it boasted a single plough and some meadow. |
