The ParishThe parish of Swettenham lies in the eastern part of Cheshire about 5 miles northwest of the market town of Congleton. Swettenham is sited in a series of small lanes which lie to the north of the A54 road which connects Congleton to Middlewich. The village is built on a ridge of higher land between the courses of the River Dane, to the south, and Swettenham Brook, to the north. These valleys are deeply cut into the land such that Swettenham, on its ridge, is 30 metres higher and has a dominating view not only over the rivers but also their confluence to the west. To the north of Swettenham the view is dominated by the installations of the Jodrell Bank radio telescope facility. The village is set at almost 80 metres above sea-level in a sandy soiled area which lends itself mostly to pastoral agriculture. The parish is small for a northern parish, and unusually for Cheshire does not have chapelries within it. It has an acreage of almost 900 acres and supported a population of just over 400 parishioners. There is no mention of Swettenham in Domesday Book. |
