The ParishThe parish of Gunwalloe is located in the extreme south of Cornwall, indeed it forms a part of Cornwall's English Channel coast. Gunwalloe is located at the base of the Lizard Peninsula about 3 miles south of the market town of Helston. Gunwalloe is a rather scattered coastal community, the village centre being located at the end of a lane leading southwards from the A3083 road which links Helston with Lizard Point. The landscape hereabouts is rather windswept and stark with tiny stonewalled fields which supported only a few hardy sheep, what little agriculture there was was restricted to valley bottoms' sheltered from the salty westerlies. The coastline here resumes its cliffed profile with heights of up to 60 metres being recorded at Halzephron Cliff, the village centre is sited at 40 metres above sea level yet is only a few hundred metres from the cliff. The main drainage, small streams heads southwards to exit about 2 miles south of the village centre in the gap in which the church is located. Gunwalloe was a relatively small parish by Cornish standards it covered just over 1,300 acres and supported almost 300 parishioners, many of whom would have been employed in the fishing industry active from the aptly named Fishing Cove. There is no specific mention of Gunwalloe in Domesday Book. |
