The ParishThe parish of St Erth lies in southwestern Cornwall about 7 miles northeast of the port of Penzance and forming a tiny portion of Cornwall's northern Irish Sea coast. St Erth is a large village sitting about a mile south of the A30 road which connects Penzance all the way through to London. In addition to this rapidly improving road modern developments in the form of the Penzance to London rail line pass through with St Erth forming the junction for the St Ives branch-line. St Erth parish extends beyond the village for some distance forming most of the "neck" of land which connects the Penwith peninsula with the rest of Cornwall. This area was, like much of Penwith, mineral rich and copper & tin workings and smelting was a factor within the economy. The remainder of activities were equally varied; pastoral farming dominated the landuse but the Hayle estuary provided port, fishing & shellfisherys for the parish. The Hayle River drains the parish the short distance to the Irish Sea. St erth is sited at between 5 and 30 metres above the sea, properties are found both sides of the Hayle River and the more modern developments have spread up the hill, local heights rise to isolated hills with Godolphin Hill reach 160 metres. St Erth parish, like many in this area, was quite extensive, covering almost 4,100 acres it would have supported a population of close to 2,500 parishioners albeit a declining one. St Erth is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book. |
