The ParishThe parish of St Mellion lies in eastern Cornwall not too far from its border with neighbouring Devon. St Mellion is located about 5 miles north of the port of Saltash. St Mellion is a small and compact village sitting on the A388 road which connects Saltash with Callington. The scenery within the parish is rather pleasant with deeply incised valleys cut into the landscape and much woodland around, the village today is rather dominated by the golf course and hotel of St Mellion Park which takes advantage of the scenery. The economy of St Mellion in the past was dominated by a mixed agricultural regime with both pastures and arable farming present. St Mellion sits close to the River Tamar which forms the border of the counties of Devon & Cornwall and small streams drain the parish eastwards to join that drowned river valley. St Mellion village is sited at around 120 metres above sea level and local heights top out at Veverdon Down just a couple of miles to the north which reaches 200 metres. St Mellion parish is of a fairly typical size for this area, it covered just under 1,500 acres and supported a population of almost 400 parishioners, many spread over the area of the parish. There is no specific mention of St Mellion in Domesday Book. |
