The ParishThe parish of Stoke Climsland lies in eastern Cornwall forming a substantial portion of the border with neighbouring Devon. Stoke Climsland is located about 7 miles west of the Devon market town of Tavistock and sits a mile east of the A388 road which connects Launceston through to Plymouth. For centuries Stoke Climsland has been a property of the Duchy of Cornwall and its Duchy Agricultural College is based to the southwest of the village. Stoke Climsland is a mid-sized village with most properties either side of a north to south running lane, a secondary settlement of Venterdon to the northwest also has some properties. Stoke Climsland parish covered an extensive area of the fertile east of Cornwall and its farming was largely arable. A small tributary of the Tamar drains the short distance eastwards to that river, here things turn south to reach the English Channel through the port of Plymouth. Stoke Climsland sits high on a ridge of land at around 140 metres above the sea, some 50 metres higher than the stream bed, land continues to rise westwards, more gently, to level out at close to 200 metres near Bray Shop. As mentioned Stoke Climsland parish was extensive, its acreage more reminiscent of a northern upland parish at just over 8,700 acres, this acreage would have supported a population of almost 2,100 parishioners spread over that area. In Domesday times Stoke Climsland was held directly by King William and contained an impressive 20 ploughs as well as the usual meadows, pastures & woodland. |
