The ParishThe parish of Tintagel is located on Cornwall's northern coast. Of course, no mention of Tintagel would be complete without reference to its Arthurian associations; its sublime ruined castle is often cited as the location of Camelot although modern forensic archaeology disputes those suggestions. It doesn't stop the tourists and the profiting by local traders, however. Tintagel is sited on the cliffs about 4 miles west of Boscastle and 5 miles northwest of Camelford, it is a rugged location with cliffs tumbling dramatically into the Atlantic with heights of 90 metres or so. The B3263 road does provide access from the interior, which is curiously flat compared to the rugged coastline. One of England's premier walking trails - The South West Way - traverses Tintagel parish on its way from Minehead to Penzance. The land use is largely for pasture, the strong Atlantic winds laden with sea salt tend to destroy arable crops, with both sheep and cattle grazing within stone built walls. The parish also had many slate quarries and was a small port mainly for their transportation. The parish is typically large with around 3,700 acres supporting almost 1,200 parishioners. Tintagel does not merit a mention in Domesday Book being included within Bossiney (now a hamlet in the parish) where the land was held by Count Robert of Mortain and supported a single plough despite land available for 6, as today livestock were important notably 40 sheep. |
