The ParishThe parish of Whitstone lies in the extreme northeast of Cornwall forming part of the border with neighbouring Devon. Whitstone is located about 6 miles southwest of the Devon market town of Holsworthy and sits on the B3254 road which connects Kilkhampton through to Launceston. Much of modern Whitstone is built either side of the B3254 and it is quite a scattered settlement albeit with a noticeable concentration around a crossroads. The area is strongly pastoral in its economy although there would also have been some quarrying of the local stone, its use mainly for road-making and local building stone. Whitstone is drained by infant tributaries of the River Strat which head northwestwards to reach the nearby Irish Sea through the seaside resort of Bude. The area around Whitstone is strongly undulating and Whitstone sits high on a ridge separating the Strat from the Tamar headwaters, Whitstone is sited at between 130 and 160 metres above the sea and local heights rise to a little over 180 metres within a couple of miles. Cornish parishes are typically fairly extensive and Whitstone was not untypical, it covered close to 3,600 acres and would have supported a population of around 450 parishioners. In Doomsday times Whitstone was a tiny place, held by Count Robert of Mortain it didn't even have a plough to itself, only a half share, besides a few livestock its only other asset was a small meadow. |
