Lullington All Saints

The Parish

The parish of Lullington lies in the extreme south of Derbyshire forming not only part of its border with neighbouring Staffordshire but also being very close to that with Leicestershire. Lullington is located roughly 7 miles north of the Staffordshire market town of Tamworth and a similar distance south of the brewing town of Burton upon Trent. Lullington sits within a broad area devoid of numbered roads, the closest lies over 3 miles to its east where runs the A444 connecting Burton upon Trent with Nuneaton. Lullington is a small and compact village sitting upon a low knoll above the course of the River Mease which forms the county's border. The area is largely pastoral, Lullington being famous, at one time, for the quality of its cheese and cattle would have been the mainstay of the local economy. The River Mease gathers a series of small southward running brooks and heads westwards to meet the Trent, here things turn back eastwards on a long journey to the North Sea arriving through the Humber Estuary. Lullington is sited at around 90 metres above the sea and sits on what is the highest point for some distance around, heights of 120 metres are the nearest comparable area some 2 miles northeast. Lullington parish was extensive for a lowland Derbyshire parish, covering just under 3,000 acres it would have supported a population of around 650 parishioners. In Domesday times Lullington was the sole property of one Edmund, a Saxon survivor, with just 4 ploughs, a small meadow and a mill Lullington was a modest settlement.

The Church

All Saints' church sits at the heart of Lullington in a junction site where Main Street meets the lane running westward towards Edingale. Sadly All Saints is a much modified church with little remaining of the original medieval. The largest intact portion of medieval work is the western tower complete with diagonal buttresses and broach spire. Even this, however, was largely rebuilt in later times. Unusually the church was the recipient of a restoration and rebuilding concurrent with this transcript, 18th century church work was unusual in England. Initially proposed in 1764 work finally was completed in 1776 and was thorough. Despite this 18th century work there was still further change wrought, as usual, by the Victorians, in the early 1860s the southern aisle and porch were added as well as a "heavy" restoration. Parking is better in the Edingale lane where an arched gateway enters the churchyard through the low local stone wall. There are a few trees, notably gathered around the western tower but most angles are available to the photographer.
