The ParishThe parish of Bishop's Tawton lies in northern Devon sitting on the banks of the River Taw about 2 miles south of the port of Barnstaple. Bishop's Tawton sits astride the A377 road which links Barnstaple with the market town of Crediton. Bishop's Tawton has a long history and was, pre-Conquest, an important place in the area as home to the episcopal palace of the Bishop's of Devon (this was later removed to Crediton). Bishop's Tawton is today a large village formed at the confluence of the Landkey Brook and the Taw and is also a suburb for its larger neighbour, Barnstaple. The main economic activity at the time of this transcript would have been pastoral farming on the flat riverine pastures whilst sheep would have grazed the steeper sloping hills. The Taw is flowing northwards to meet the Bristol Channel through its joint estuary with the Torridge. Bishop's Tawton is sited at around 10 metres above sea level but hills rise just beyond the village with the monument of Codden Hill to the southeast reaching 140 metres just over a mile from the village. Bishop's Tawton parish is one of the larger parishes in the area, it covered around 4,000 acres and would have supported just over 1,800 parishioners. In Domesday times Bishop's Tawton was held by the Bishop of Exeter and was a wealthy place indeed, it offered an immense 106 ploughs as well as extensive pastures, meadows and woodland. |
