The ParishThe parish of Broadwoodkelly lies in the western portion of central Devon. broadwoodkelly lies about 5 miles northeast of the large village of Hatherleigh and about 2 miles southwest of Winkleigh. Broadwoodkelly sits on a low ridge just west of the A3124 road which links Great Torrington with the A30 road just to the east of Okehampton. Broadwoodkelly is a small, compact village which clusters around its junction of narrow lanes and the adjacent village green. The area is largely dominated by pastoral farming in small enclosed fields, cattle predominated amongst the livestock. The A3124 road follows the main ridge of land to the east of the village, Broadwoodkelly being built on a declining ridge and sited at 130 metres above sea level. To north and south small becks run westwards to join the Hole Brook and thence the River Torridge, flowing to the sea through the estuary at Bideford. The area has a maze of parishes some large others small, Broadwoodkelly is among the smaller set at 2,400 acres it supported around 470 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was held by a gentleman of the name Modbert and was rather small boasting a mere 3 ploughs as well as patches of meadow and woodland. |
