The ParishThe parish of Clyst St George lies in southern Devon roughly 5 miles southeast of the city of Exeter. Clyst St George sits on the A376 road which links Exeter with Exmouth. Most properties lie slightly east of the main road with the notional centre clustered around the junction with the B3179 headed for Woodbury. The village name comes from a combination of its proximity to the River Clyst which flows just to the west and the dedication of its church. The soils are light and productive in this portion of Devon east of the Exe and a mixed farming regime would have been in place with roughly equal proportions of arable and pasture. Clyst St George sits almost at the end of the Clyst's course as within a mile in emerges into the combined estuary with the Exe to reach the nearby English Channel. Clyst St George is sited at around 20 metres above the sea in its valley setting, away from the Clyst land rises steadily eastwards reaching 176 metres just east of Woodbury Castle. Covering just 1,000 acres Clyst St George was towards the smaller end of the scale for Devon parishes, that acreage would have supported a population of close to 350 parishioners. In Domesday times Clyst St George was held by Ralph de Pomeroy and was an equally small arable manor offering just 6 ploughs and a small meadow. |
