The ParishThe parish of Dittisham is located in south Devon, on the estuary of the River Dart about 3 miles north of the port of Dartmouth. Dittisham is a compact settlement on a narrow ridge which juts into the estuary as a peninsula. The village is accessed by a long narrow lane running northeast from the A3122 road which connects Dartmouth with the Totnes-Kingsbridge main road. Dittisham is in a spectacular location with views to both north and south along the picturesque River Dart estuary making it a popular tourist stop. The landscape is deeply incised with steep slopes down to valleys and the estuary. The land is mainly pastoral with small fields with hedge and stone boundaries characteristic of the area. Dittisham is located at about 40 metres above the estuary but land rises to the southwest to approach 200 metres within a couple of miles. Dittisham parish covered just over 3,000 acres and supported just over 900 parishioners. In Domesday times Dittisham was held by one Baldwin the Sheriff and supported 12 ploughs as well possessing pasture and woodland with a lengthy list of livestock held. |
