The ParishThe parish of Georgeham lies in the extreme north of Devon, indeed it forms part of Devon's picturesque northern coast with the Bristol Channel. Georgeham is a large and compact village lying about 8 miles northwest of the town of Barnstaple, the parish also includes the modern surfing resort of Croyde which is also a popular retirement & holiday home village. Georgeham sits, on the brow of a hill in the deeply incised landscape, about 2 miles west of the A361 road which connects Barnstaple with Braunton & the seaside resort of Ilfracombe. The area would, at the time of this transcript, have largely been employed in pastoral farming, nowadays this prevails but the long coastline of the parish is dominated by the tourism business and a long stretch of the South West Coastal Trail passes through the parish notably around Baggy Point and Saunton Down. Georgeham is largely drained by a small stream which reaches the Bristol Channel through Croyde. Georgeham is sited at around 90 metres above the sea and the landscape is incised by as much as 50 metres in the river valleys nearby, Saunton Down, to the south, and Pickwell Down, to the north, the latter topping 192 metres are prominent and close by. Devon parishes can be large and Georgeham is no exception, it covered just over 4,000 acres and supported a population which was just over 900 parishioners. In Domesday times Georgeham was a small place, held by one Theobald son of Berner, it could offer just 3 ploughs and a small meadow. |
