The ParishThe parish of Kingskerswell lies in southeastern Devon not too far from its coast with the English Channel. Kingskerswell is located about 3 miles southeast of the market town of Newton Abbot. Kingskerswell sits astride the A380 road which links Newton Abbot with the seaside resort of Torquay, thankfully the village is now bypassed by the modern South Devon Expressway, the Exeter to Torbay rail line also passes through the village. Kingskerswell is a substantial village which sits in the broad valley of the Aller Brook and spreads for almost 2 miles along the former line of the A380. The area would largely have been used for pastoral farming at the time of this transcript, today it is largely a commuter village for larger towns and the resorts of Torbay nearby. The Aller Brook drains the parish northwards to reach the River Teign and the English Channel through the Teign Estuary. Kingskerswell is sited at around 30 metres above the sea sitting in rolling countryside with local heights as high as 160 metres close by. Kingskerswell parish was of a fairly typical size for this area of Devon, it covered almost 1,700 acres and would have supported a population of about 850 parishioners. In Domesday times Kingskerswell was held directly by King William, himself, and could offer 17 ploughs as well as small meadows & woodland. |
