The ParishThe parish of Lympstone is located in southeastern Devon, it forms part of the southern coast of the county as it borders the Exe Estuary. Lympstone is located about 2 miles north of the seaside resort of Exmouth on the eastern bank of the Exe Estuary and stretching between the A376 road, which connects Exmouth to Exeter, and the estuary. Lympstone is a substantial village with housing located either alongside the main street or along the Exe to the south. Lympstone has good communications as as well as the A road the Exeter to Exmouth railway line also passes through with a station. Lympstone is sited between 10 and 40 metres above sea level as land rises inland from the estuary. The parish was dominated by pastoral farming and by the sea, many men earned a living either from the estuary or from the sea beyond. Nowadays the red soil is exposed more and more as modern machinery work the land for arable crops. Lympstone also has an important role for the military as the commando training base sits just to the north. Lympstone parish is small, just over 1,100 acres, yet supported a healthy total of almost 1,000 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was held by one Richard, son of Count Gilbert, and supported just 8 ploughs. |
