The ParishThe parish of Mariansleigh lies in north central Devon, the village sits on high ground about 4 miles southeast of the market town of South Molton in a network of lanes to the east of the B3137 which links South Molton with Witheridge and thence to Tiverton. As stated this is an upland village perched on a down at about 190 metres above sea level. Deeply cut valleys of the rivers Mole and Cooked Oak hem in the land to north and south making for a steeply chiseled landscape. The area is dominated by small fields of pasture with the famous Devon cattle, largely bred for meat, the prime stock. The parish was physically quite large, around 1,700 acres although a third were not put to agricultural use, and supported just over 300 parishioners. Mariansleigh has a long history receiving a mention in Domesday book where the land was held by King William himself and administered through the King's Sergeants, the village was large enough to support 9 ploughs. |
