The ParishThe parish of East Teignmouth is located on Devon's eastward facing coast, it forms, along with its sister parish of West Teignmouth, the market town, seaside resort and port of Teignmouth. East Teignmouth occupies the northern part of the town and the coast northwards towards Dawlish. East Teignmouth is located about 6 miles north of Torquay and about 15 miles southeast of Exeter and is built at the mouth of the River Teign. The A379 coastal road bridges the Teign to the west of the parish and follows the coast northwards. Teignmouth is a substantial town rising from the Teign's banks northwards and westwards for more than a mile. Teignmouth was a prosperous fishing port long before its more modern role of seaside resort and it was granted a market by Henry III in the thirteenth century. Nowadays the parish is dominated by its splendid promenades and it is a popular resort for day trippers and longer stays. Teignmouth covers a wide range of elevations from sea level almost to 150 metres in the upper suburbs, the drainage is of course the River Teign which exits to the English Channel through West Teignmouth parish. East Teignmouth parish covered only a small geographical area but it supported a population of over 1,500 parishioners. There is no mention of Teignmouth in Domesday Book. |
