The ParishThe parish of Wembworthy lies in central Devon about 3 miles northeast of the large village of Winkleigh. Wembworthy is a small and compact village sitting on a ridge of land, in lanes about 2 miles west of the A377 which connects Barnstaple with Crediton. The A road follows the Taw Valley as does the railway. Much of Wembworthy would have been engaged in farming at the time of this transcript, the predominant landuse being pastoral in small hedged fields. Wembworthy is drained by a number of small brooks which make their way northeast to join the Taw, thence to the Bristol Channel through the port of Barnstaple. Wembworthy is sited at around 150 metres above the sea on a ridge of land which rises to local heights of 195 metres about 2 miles southwest on the Eggesford to Winkleigh road. Parishes in this area of Devon are quite large in extent and Wembworthy was a little smaller than most, it covered just over 1,900 acres and would have supported a population of around 400 parishioners. In Domesday times Wembworthy, held by one Baldwin the Sheriff, was a tiny place, it could offer just 3 ploughs and a small meadow. |
