The ParishThe parish of Charmouth lies in the extreme southwest of Dorset, indeed it forms part of Dorset's English Channel coast and is also very close to Dorset's border with neighbouring Devon. Charmouth sits on the coast about 2 miles east of the resort of Lyme Regis. The A35 road from Axminster to Bridport & Dorchester formerly ran through the northern part of the village but now bypasses to the north. Charmouth principally consists of three main roads, the old A35 running west to east in the north and two side lanes heading southeast and south from either end of The Street. The village would have been a place with two differing identities, the village centre reflects an agricultural inland (dominated by sheep on the limestone & sandstone downlands) and the coastal edge with its fisherman. Charmouth, as its name suggests, sits where the River Char runs into the English Channel forming a notable breach in the cliff-line of the Jurassic Coast. The coastal fringe is obviously at or near sea level, however the main street is sited at around 30 metres but sloping steeply eastwards to the Char and southwards to the coast. By Dorset standards Charmouth was a tiny parish, it covered less than 500 acres but supported a population of 600 parishioners. In Domesday times Charmouth was held by one Count Robert of Mortain and was a small place having just 4 ploughs and small patches of woodland and meadow. |
