The ParishThe parish of Dewlish sits almost centrally within the county of Dorset. Dewlish is a small village located in chalk country about 7 miles northeast of the market town of Dorchester. Dewlish sits in lanes about a mile north of the A354 road which runs from Puddletown to Blandford Forum. The village sits on the western banks of the rather strangely named Devil's Brook, a small bubbling chalk stream seemingly too small for its deep valley. The area is dominated by chalk downland and would have largely been the domain of sheep at the time of this transcript. Nowadays with improved machinery and fertilisers much has transferred to arable farming. The parish is dominated by the grounds of the Stuart-era Dewlish House which have been landscaped into attractive parkland. The Devil's Brook drains southwards to join the River Piddle before making its way southeastwards to Poole Harbour through Wareham. Dewlish is sited at around 80 metres above the sea, the valley is enclosed by chalk hills standing a further 40 metres higher and local heights reach over 200 metres to the north on Henning Hill & Coombe Hill. Dewlish parish was slightly small for the region covering around 2,100 acres and supporting a population of just under 400 parishioners. In Domesday times Dewlish was held by one Count Alan of Brittany and could offer 9 ploughs as well as meadows, pasture & woodland. |
