The ParishThe parish of Gussage All Saints lies in northeastern Dorset not too far from its border with neighbouring Wiltshire. Gussage All Saints, one of a trio of "Gussages" is located about 6 miles north of the market town of Wimborne Minster and a similar distance northeast of Blandford Forum. Gussage All Saints sits, in lanes about 2 miles northwest of the B3078 road which connects Wimborne Minster with the large Hampshire village of Fordingbridge. Gussage All Saints is a small and largely linear village built along the valley of a tributary of the River Allen. The area is nowadays largely arable farmland and that would have predominated as the principal economy at the time of this transcript, too. The small brook drains southeastwards to join the Allen and reaches the Stour at Wimborne Minster before reaching the English Channel through Poole Harbour. Gussage All Saints is sited at around 50 metres above sea level, set in its valley in a landscape that rises in gently rolling hills to local heights of 90 metres above the sea on the inter-fluvial ridges. Gussage All Saints parish was of a fairly typical size for a parish in the area, it covered just over 2,400 acres and would have supported a population of just under 400 parishioners. In Domesday times Gussage All Saints was held by Count Robert of Mortain and could offer 8 ploughs, small meadows, pastures & woodland plus a mill. |
