The ParishThe parish of Lytchett Minster lies in eastern Dorset about 5 miles west of the town & port of Poole. The village formerly bisected by the A35 (fortunately now bypassing to the south) is built on a low plain, just 8 metres above sea level, where the Sherford River heads into an arm of Poole Harbour (Lytchett Bay). The village is very much built upon a break of slope, higher ground rises steeply to the north, where a dry route could be followed through the wet ground. The land use varies across the range of the parish, lower areas being pasture, some agricultural and rising to heathland typical of this part of Dorset. Although Lytchett Minster has been around for a long time it was not separately mentioned in Domesday Book. |
