The ParishThe parish of Pimperne lies in northeastern Dorset, not too far from its border with neighbouring Wiltshire. Pimperne is located about 2 miles northeast of the market town of Blandford Forum. Pimperne is a small and compact village built on and just west of the A354 road which connects Blandford Forum with Salisbury. Pimperne is built on rolling chalk downland, a landscape that would have been dominated by sheep grazing at the time of this transcript, nowadays arable predominates. Pimperne sits in a shallow valley between the downs and a small stream drains the parish southwestwards to join the River Stour at Blandford Forum before heading southeast to reach the English Channel through Christchurch Harbour. Pimperne is sited at around 60 metres above the sea although local heights rise to the downland tops at 100 metres or so. Dorset parishes are fairly large and Pimperne fitted that pattern, it covered around 3,400 acres and would have supported a population of around 550 parishioners. In Domesday times Pimperne was held directly by the King and could offer 24 plough as well as 2 mils and small pastures, meadows & woodland - a prosperous small settlement indeed. |
