The ParishThe parish of Fingringhoe lies in eastern Essex close to its coast with the North Sea. Fingringhoe lies about 4 miles southeast of the city of Colchester on the banks of the River Colne which, here, begins to widen into an estuary. Fingringhoe lies about a mile to the east of the B1025 road which links Colchester with Mersea Island. The village is today small with a centre gathered around a crossroads to the south of the Roman River. The coast line of Essex is deeply indented with creeks and rivers in this area and is a haven for sailors and wildfowl, much of Fingringhoe parish is set to grazing marsh although there is higher ground to the south of the village which in intensively arable. Fingringhoe centre lies at just over 10 metres above sea level, so just enough to keep its feet dry. The parish is large for a southern one, at just over 3,000 acres, and it supported almost 600 parishioners. Fingringhoe is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book but it almost certainly existed, it is probably subsumed within wither Wivenhoe or East Donyland. |
