The ParishThe parish of Frating lies in eastern Essex not too far from its creek-laden North Sea coast. Frating is located roughly 6 miles east of Colchester and sits a mile south of the A133 road which connects Colchester through to Clacton on Sea. There is very little to modern day Frating, a collection of farms and cottages gathered loosely around the hall. It is suspected that Frating parish was a closed parish with most land in the hands of a single landowner restricted inbound migration such that no defined village was formed. The area is rich arable farming land and growing of cereals would have underpinned the local economy. Modern developments have come to Frating with construction of the Colchester to Clacton on Sea rail line but Frating has no station. Frating is drained the short distance to the outer Colne Estuary by the Tenpenny Brook, water soon reaching the North Sea. Frating is sited at around 20 metres above the sea in very gentle terrain where land varies little more than 10 metres from that height for many a mile. Frating parish was fairly small, not atypical for its county, covering just over 1,200 acres it would have supported a population of around 250 parishioners. In Domesday times Frating was equally small despite being shared by Ranulf Peverel and Count Eustace of Boulogne the whole could muster just 8 ploughs with some meadow and pig-infested woodland, over 500 are recorded. |
