The ParishThe parish of Goldhanger sits in eastern Essex almost centrally along its North Sea Coast. Goldhanger forma part of the fretted creek coastline of Essex. Goldhanger is located about 4 mile east of the port of Maldon and sits on and to the south of the B1026 road which connects Maldon with Colchester. Most of the properties are sited along the B road or along a triangle of lanes which run off it to the south. Goldhanger is a coastal settlement but would have earned its living from the land, the coast being muddy and unsuitable as a harbour. The principal economy would have been farming, arable on higher ground and pastoral (mainly cattle) on the coastal saltings and reclaimed lands, there would also have been lucrative wildfowling possibilities through the winter period. Much of the parish is drained by man-made ditches running to sluices which feed the runoff into the Blackwater estuary on which Goldhanger sits. Essex parishes are typically quite small and Goldhanger was no exception it covered just over 1,600 acres and supported a population of around 500 parishioners. In Domesday times Goldhanger was held by three gentlemen (Ranulf Peverel, Hugh de Montfort & Count Eustace of Boulogne) it could only offer 4 plough as well as meadows, pastures & woodland but did possess a salthouse. |
