The ParishThe parish of Henham is located in northwestern Essex close to the border with neighbouring Hertfordshire. Henham is located about 5 miles northeast of the Hertfordshire market town of Bishop's Stortford and just east of the busy M11 motorway which runs north to south through the western portion of the parish. To find Henham in its set of narrow lanes you follow the B1051 road which runs from Stansted Mountfichet to Thaxted and then turn north. Henham is a fairly compact village with a well defined centre grouped around church and inn, most housing lies along one or other of the two main lanes running through the village which meet just south of both church and inn. The village is sited at about 110 metres above sea level and is surrounded by intensely fertile arable land, what drainage there is is heading towards the northwest as part of the headwaters of the River Cam (more famous at Cambridge). The parish is of a normal size for a lowland parish and was richly populated supporting over 850 parishioners. In Domesday times the parish supported no fewer than 12 ploughs and the book lists extensive animal and woodland assets too, all land was held by one Ralph Baynard. |
