The ParishThe parish of Heybridge lies on Essex's eastern coast roughly centrally along its coastline. Heybridge is just north (and indeed contiguous) with the port of Maldon. Heybridge is located astride the B1026 road which links Maldon to the city of Colchester just across the River Chelmer and Langford Cut (canal) from the port of Maldon itself. The parish of Heybridge contains a short stretch of Essex's coast along the estuary of the Blackwater, which merges with the Chelmer just west of Heybridge. Heybridge had a rather split personality at the time of this transcript, whilst agriculture (arable inland and grazing on the saltings) employed many, there were also jobs to be had in the extensive salt pans of the parish and of course work as a port employee. As a consequence Heybridge was a bustling and prosperous place. Heybridge stands at barely a metre above sea level, protected by raised banks where necessary, it is said that St Andrew's church used to be washed by the highest tides. The parish was a typical size for the county but because of its industries supported almost 1,200 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was held by the Canons of St Paul (London) and although it supported a mere 4 ploughs it possessed saltings and mill as well as the usual meadows and pastures. |
