The ParishThe parish of Langley lies in the extreme northwest of Essex and forming a stretch of the border with neighbouring Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, too, is not so far away from it either. Langley is located roughly 8 miles west of the market town of Saffron Walden. Langley sits within an area devoid of significant numbered roads, the closest such road is the B1039 which links Saffron Walden with Royston in Hertfordshire and which lies some 3 miles north of Langley. Langley is a distributed village consisting of 2 distinct settlements, Lower Green and a half mile northeast, and appropriately higher, Upper Green. It is at Upper Green that one finds the church and the 17th century Langley Hall. Most Essex parishes have a distinctly arable feel but early gazetteers place only 50% of Langley's acreage as set to crops with almost an equal amount devoted to pastures & woodland. Langley is drained southeastwards by the infant River Stort which joins the Lee on the outskirts of Greater London, passes through the East End before meeting the outer Thames and the North Sea. Lower Green is sited at around 110 metres with Upper Green some 20 metres higher on some of the highest ground in its county, just across the Hertfordshire border a local high spot of 142 metres marks the highest ground. Langley parish was fairly typically sized for its area, covering close to 1,600 acres it would have supported a population of around 450 parishioners. Langley is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book. |
