The ParishThe parish of Mistley lies in the extreme northeast of Essex, indeed it forms part of Essex's intricate North Sea coast by virtue of lying on the navigable River Stour, which here also forms the border with neighbouring Suffolk. Mistley is located about 6 miles west of the port of Harwich and sits on the B1352 road which connects the port with the large village of Manningtree. Mistley is largely built along the foreshore of the Stour and was, until recently, a commercial port trading in corn & malt outbound and coal inbound. The village was extensively remodeled by the Rigby family based on profits from the South Sea Company and is almost a model for later Garden Village schemes. The increased silting of the Stour Estuary and the growth of both Harwich & Felixstowe has largely made it a pleasure port nowadays. Other than its port facilities Mistley would have largely earned its income from a mixture of fishing and arable agriculture. As a coastal village numerous brooks drain into the Stour. Mistley is sited at sea level rising some 30 metres or so to the modern development of New Mistley, the surrounding countryside being gently undulating. Mistley parish was of a fairly typical size for the area, it covered almost 2,100 acres and would have supported a population of just under 1,000 parishioners. In Domesday times Mistley gets the briefest of mentions, having few assets, and being held by one Roger of Rames. |
