The ParishThe parish of Springfield lies in the southern part of central Essex. Springfield, formerly a separate village has now been absorbed into the recently made city of Chelmsford. Springfield is located about a mile northeast of the city of Chelmsford and is separated by the River Chelmer. The heart of "old" Springfield would have sat just to the north of the old A12 route which connected Chelmsford with Colchester. Nowadays Chelmsford has spread markedly and Springfield has become a contiguous suburb of its larger neighbour, modern housing has expanded Springfield to several orders larger than its original size. Modern communications run through the parish, not only the modern A12 (now bypassing all to the south) but the rail line from London to East Anglia and also the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation. At the time of this transcript Springfield would have earned its living largely from arable agriculture, nowadays many light industries are sited in the parish on industrial estates. Springfield is drained by the Chelmer which heads eastwards to reach the North Sea through the port of Maldon & the Blackwater Estuary. Springfield is sited at around 40 metres above the and land is gently rolling at that or close to it. Springfield parish was of a fairly typical size for its area, it covered just over 2,700 acres and would have supported a population of around 2,300 parishioners. In Domesday times Springfield was shared by Ranulf Peverel & Robert Gernon it could offer 8 ploughs, small meadows & woodland but did possess a mill & a fishery. |
