The ParishThe parish of East Tilbury is located in southern Essex, indeed it forms part of its southernmost border with the estuary of the River Thames. East Tilbury is about 4 miles east of the town of Grays and about 7 miles south of the new town of Basildon. The parish is sited at the end of a long minor road which heads southwards from the A13 towards the Thames. East Tilbury once hosted a ferry across the river to neighbouring Kent and is the location for one of London's major Napoleonic forts which defended the Thames from potential invasion. In more recent times it was famed for its 1930s planned "Factory Village" created by the Bata company. The original small village was sited on the first river terrace above the Thames at about 10 metres above sea level, a noticeable steep slope runs down from there to grazing marshes. The parish was quite extensive at over 2,000 acres and whilst the higher ground was arable the marshes provided pastoral land and wildfowling opportunities. The parish supported in excess of 300 parishioners. In Domesday times, where it shared several entries with its neighbour West Tilbury, it supported 6 ploughs, 300 sheep and a fishery. |
