The ParishThe parish of Widford lies in central Essex about a mile southwest of the town of Chelmsford, it derives its name from its location at the crossing of the River Wid on which river's eastern banks it sits. Widford was formerly a separate small village sitting on the busy A12 road which connects Chelmsford with London but this has been moved to a wider bypass around the town, however Widford is still busy with traffic as it sits on the main approach into Chelmsford from the capital. Widford, today, is contiguous with the urban area of Chelmsford being just the southwestern suburb of the town, modern housing, light industrial and urban fringe retail developments dominate the former small village. At the time of this transcript Widford would have earned its living from arable agriculture. Widford is drained by the Wid to the north but it soon reaches the Chelmer and reverses direction to reach the North Sea through the port of Maldon the Blackwater Estuary. Widford is sited at around 40 metres above the sea and some 10 metres above the Wid, land around is gently undulating to no great local heights. Widford parish was small, even by Essex standards, it covered just under 700 acres and would have supported a population of around 350 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Widford in Domesday Book. |
