The ParishThe parish of Merthyr Dyfan lies in the extreme south of Glamorgan forming a short stretch of the county's coastline with the outer Bristol Channel. Merthyr Dyfan lies roughly 8 miles southwest of the capital of Cardiff and sits just south of the A4050 road which forms the northern edge of the urban area of Barry. Whilst Merthyr Dyfan would have been a discrete and small settlement today the growing port & resort of Barry has expanded inland and engulfed Merthyr Dyfan into its urban area. At the time of this transcript Merthyr Dyfan would have been largely a pastoral farming parish but today is merely a suburb of Barry. Merthyr Dyfan is drained westwards by the River Waycock which heads for the nearby Bristol Channel at Aberthaw. Merthyr Dyfan is sited at around 80 metres above the sea and sits on something of a local high point with land falling away in all directions. Parishes in Glamorgan are either fairly small or very large depending upon the topography, Merthyr Dyfan was one of the former, covering just 1,100 acres it would have supported a population of just under 150 parishioners. Like most of Wales Merthyr Dyfan is not mentioned in Domesday Book which did not cover this area. |
