The ParishThe parish of Awre lies in west central Gloucestershire sitting on the western banks of the River Severn about 7 miles northeast of the small market town of Lydney. Awre is located about 2 miles east of the A48 road which connects Lydney through to Gloucester. The Severn is broad and sinuous here and describes a substantial meander in which Awre sits on a western promontory, an ideal spot for watching the famous Severn Bore as it winds its way upstream. Awre is a compact village occupying slightly higher ground in the centre of that peninsula, within the wider parish the township of Blakeney had its own church which was licensed for marriages and will have its own page. The course of the Severn has altered many times through history and whilst the parish once had a port (Gatcomb) this has long since vanished. Awre's economy would have been underpinned by pastoral farming, with some exploitation of the nearby estuary for fish & shellfish. As a coastal community many manmade drains take water to the nearby Estuary. Awre is sited at around 20 metres above the sea, land rises steadily westward, reaching 100 metres by the A48 and 200 metres and above in the nearby Forest of Dean. Awre parish was one of the larger in the county, albeit part of that area was in the chapelry of Blakeney, it covered almost 4,100 acres and together with Blakeney would have supported close to 1,300 parishioners. In Domesday times Awre was a possession of King William, himself, and a wealthy asset it was too, offering an impressive 19 ploughs that income was enhanced by the parish having not only a mill but also a salthouse and a fishery. |
